A longer RPO is cheaper but there is more data loss in this case.

RTO stands for recovery time objective. It refers to how quickly backup and recovery solutions allow companies to bounce back from a crisis and resume normal business. Businesses suffer financial costs when systems are down, so they must quickly recover to reduce damages and lost data. Similar to RPO, a shorter RTO costs more because it demands quicker networks, technologies, and storage. An RTO of a few hours is fairly typical for many businesses and storage systems.

  • Cloud Backup Service

Many vendors and cloud providers provide a cloud backup service as a service solution (BaaS), which allows the pushing of local data to a public or private cloud followed by recovering data from the cloud in the event of a disaster. Cloud storage services are simple to use and have the significant advantage of storing data in a remote location, especially for distributed teams

However, in the case of using public cloud storage, businesses must ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards, as well as consider that data storage costs for a cloud backup will be much higher over time than the cost of deploying similar storage on-premises or via data centers. Cloud backup services are the most common choice nowadays, especially with the surge of other cloud computing services. 

  • Data Backup to Local Storage

One of the more outdated ways to back up data is using local disks. However, it’s mostly applicable for small systems and when there’s enough space within the system to recover data. It’s a very quick and easy way to back up data, and it doesn’t require a network. Larger data volumes require backup to multiple discs, which tend to make recovery difficult. Moreover, this leaves room for data loss in case of an accident, such as a fire or flood, without enterprise backup software, online backup services, or cloud backup services.

  • Removable Media

Another usable yet a bit outdated backup solution is the backing up of files on removable media such as DVDs, newer Blu-Ray disc CDs, or USB flash drives. This is effective in smaller environments, but it’s unreasonable for larger data volumes or as a full database backup. Also, while using this solution, companies must make sure to keep these backup devices in a separate location from their on-premise data center; otherwise, they’re at risk of being lost in a disaster along with the source, making even a disaster recovery solution inapplicable.

  • Backup Software Solutions

There are many recovery software solutions available on the market that provide backup and recovery services. These pre-installed recovery software solutions on a system handle all backup processes for data protection. Many solutions allow the use of existing systems, but others require a dedicated cloud server only used for backup. Companies must first install and configure the operating systems and backup software. In many cases, a virtual machine (VM) installs the backup software.

Enterprise backup software solutions provide greater flexibility than hardware appliances, especially if infrastructure changes frequently. Besides that, recovery software solutions are less expensive than acquiring a hardware appliance package.

  • Hardware Appliances

Another option for data backup is a hardware appliance. Many vendors offer full backup appliances typically deployed as 19-inch rack-mounted devices. These backup devices store a large amount of data with pre-installed backup software in them. All that remains is to install backup agents on the system and to define the backup policy and schedule. It’s better to keep the backup device separate from the local network and if possible keep it at a remote location.

What’s the 3-2-1 Data Backup Strategy?

Many businesses use the 3-2-1 strategy to keep their data or data center safe in any condition and to minimize the risk of data loss. The 3-2-1 title refers to making 3 copies of the data to backup data, storing them in 2 different storage forms, and storing at least 1 copy at some remote location.

  • Copies

    These 3 copies should include 1 original and 2 duplicate copies of the data. These duplicate copies ensure safety and recover data in case of any lost backup or corrupted media situation.

  • Storages

    Companies help protect their data in case of failure of a medium with the use of 2 different types of storage media. For this purpose, companies choose from the use of internal or external hard drives, cloud storage, online backup service, and/or removable media.

  • Off-site Copy

    An off-site copy is necessary to help ensure data protection in case of any natural or human-made crisis affecting the premises.
